Thomas Frank: Glenn Beck's Hotline to Nowhere

Glenn Beck, the popular Fox News host, has a red telephone on his desk that never seems to ring. Every now and then, in a moment of acute frustration, he will pick it up and give the camera his trademark pleading-puppy look.

What Mr. Beck wants to hear from the phone are answers, and he wants to hear them from the highest authority in the land: the phone, he says, is "a dedicated line right to… » Full Story on Huffington Post

A clueless article for the clueless. A bit of a morale booster for the troops. I guess they are supposed to memorize the easy parts of it and regurgitate it on command.

If it is a critique of the show it sucks.

But my favorite line of all: "Mr. Beck's silent phone really symbolizes is a new kind of ignorance, a coming high-tech dark age in which people can choose to blow off professional standards of inquiry" THOMAS, YOU IDIOT!!! If he did that, he would be in the MAINSTREAM MEDIA (Don't you keep up on current events?)

Typical lib rhetoric. If obama wanted to call and refute Beck Im sure he could get the number. Why is obama hiding from Fox and Beck? Hes been on TV alot of times including letterman. I guess the only ones he will talk to are the ones throwing him softball questions. Time to man-up obama and call.

I know this is entirely 100% unrelated to the article, but I also know i'd get a lot of people commenting here that generally don't like A.P.
I personally don't have a problem with AP, but I knew you guys would love this picture. Other than me blurring out some personal stuff, this is a screen shot of my monitor when i clicked on something:

We would all like this administration to answer some basic questions...whats wrong with that?
Oh yeah....thats right...Those very same answers would expose Obama for what he really is, and not his carefully crafted image.
If these people were honest, they'd have no issue with transparency, but they do...
Common crooks tend to hide from what they are...see the common thread buddy?
Disgraceful

All publicity is good publicity. Gotta thank Huff. pst. for raising Glenn Beck's stature. People cannot ignore facts, but I haven't heard of any lawsuits being brought against Glenn Beck. Beck terrifies everyone in Obama's admin.; but ignoring that splinter in your big toe causes you to walk awkwardly ! And, the funniest part is how you have to contort your whole body to get at that pesky little splinter !

I think Mr. Frank is upset simply because Beck's red phone makes the point obvious to everyone without wasting a single word.

i really think the point of this story is to point out how ridiculous BECKS actions are. not praising him.

the white house would have to cooperate with having a direct line. that status is for a very select few. and i really dont think some pissant like beck is in the group.

I love the drama of the red phone, Anita Dunn boasted of correcting a lot of untruths ( most people would say lies) and Beck is giving her every opportunity to rebuke theo called untruths. Thomas Frank is just among many who line up to kiss Obama's arse

I'm surprised this writer didn't go after Beck as much as the Puffington Compost usually does. The guy is exposing people everyday and the "red phone" is a private number he setup so the white house could call and refute his claims. So far... no calls. Interesting!!!

I think it's hilarious how the Huffington Post tries to discredit Beck by trying to explain away or make excuses for the White House. It is now a proven fact that the American citizens, (with the exception of a few smarter than everybody lefters!) LOL!! are sick and tired of the White House circus! A statment has been made by the election in Va. and N.J. we have had ENOUGH!!

If someone was telling lies about me or my administration, I would have the courage to confront them and protect my reputation. Guess Obama has no courage or maybe what Beck says is the complete truth. Obama wouldn't recognize truth. He likes to make misleading statements to pull you in. The young are particularly vulnerable.

Say what you want about BECK....I don't see anyone in the WHITE HOUSE refuting his claims....and I've noticed many other News orgs. are starting to report real News. I flip back and forth to see the MEDIA reaction to different topics. Glen is no more bias then many on the other networks that do reporting. During the election Rachael Madcows Adams apple seem like it was going to explode! Looked like she was going into rut.

Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh are worse than manure. At least manure can be used for fertilize. These 2 jerks aren't worth that. There dribble would kill a plant. There is a difference in being conservative and being a blithering fool.

I have tried to watch Glenn Beck a couple of times, just to see what all the fuss is over, and I've got to say, I see nothing but half truths, outright lies, exaggerations, fear tactics, and paranoid fantasies. He is all about whipping up fear and hate. If Rush, Palin, Glenn Beck, and other talking heads of their ilk speak for the Republican Party, then the Republican Party will be reduced to a political refuge for angry white people in an increasingly brown world. At one point this summer, I believe Mr. Beck was actually promoting rebellion in a time when we all need, as Americans, to pull together and solve the huge problems we face: problems that could destroy not only our country, but our world. I believe that the great majority of Americans want President Obama to succeed and will give him a greater majority in 2010. Then, perhaps, we will tune out these people and start working together, as Americans, not as Democrats or Republicans.

The conservative "movement" has certainly worked itself into lather since Obama took office; if possible, they've taken right-wing vitriol and hysteria to a whole new level.

Conservatives have lost any grasp they may have had on intellectualism. Today's conservative "intellects" consist of people like Malkin, Jonah Goldberg, Ann Coulter, Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, etc. People with semi-functioning brains understand that these individuals aren't intellectuals but rather provocateurs that pollute the public debate with half-truths, outright lies, and veiled calls to violence.
