Dubai delays debut of tallest tower to early 2010

The media office of the city-state's ruler said Wednesday the hulking Burj Dubai will now debut on Jan. 4, a month later than expected. The new opening date is timed to coincide with the fourth anniversary of Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum 's appointment as ruler of Dubai. » Full Story on news.yahoo.com

They forgot to mention that the former tallest structure has been the CN tower in Canada since 1976. it stands at 1815 feet or 553 meters.

Going to the biggest collapse once it opens.
I don't think Canada was mentioned because they don't have the money this country does. Man made island that looks like a plan tree, a sky scrapper with tennis court overlooking the water.
May the sheik put that in his coffin (pipe) and "smoke it" as they say.
Aha, may he live a sickly, err healthy : Q life, free from the misery that those who made him wealthy, went through, yea right.... Probably a slum lord to boot.
So much more good could have been done with what was spent on material bragging rights and goods.
May a camel, oxen, monkey, or what ever else you hold sacred die in front of ya.
Middle finger salute to ya.

It is stupidly for what reason to build tallest building first place. Who cares if it is all about bragging rights. I wonder what is their safety standpoint of the building to handle the weight stress at the base. I wouldn't be surprised if they have problems. It reminds me of Titanic that can fail.

I was lucky enough to visit Dubai in 2003 and 2005, it is a great city and this is an awesome looking building. I wish we still made cool stuff like this.

Building the largest structures in the world used to be the domain of the US. Sadly, we have fallen behind. It is a case of national pride, as well as engineering skills, to build bigger and better. I believe a massive sky scraper built on the site of the twin towers tragedy would be a huge symbolic message to the rest of the world. But, it is quite apparent that "big oil" middle east countries have the means and the know how to trump everyone else. Come on US! Let's show them what we are made of...once again! The Chinese have plans for a building that will dwarf the Dubai project. Come on US!

To the commentators that negatively and unfairly judge a magnificent piece of architecturing and engineering that they have never seen in person or ever have a chance to set foot on... stop your obvious jealousy and narrow-minded. I had a chance to visit the Petronas Twin Towers of Kulua Lumpur (which hold the world record before the Tapei 101 Tower took over) and it was an incredible feast of technology and human endeavour. So, this tower in Dubai would definitely be in the same category if not more. Congratulations, Dubai!!!

It looks like we have a bunch of anti-US postings on this site. And that is fine, as this is a free Country. But if you have a remark or opinion, why don't you elaborate? Give your opinion! Some have, and most haven't! It's an open forum! What do you like, or what don't you like...and why?

Poor Chinese workers got shafted, however, we see how those Chinese buildings seem to fall at the tiniest shake of the Earth.

Wonderful ! Maybe we can delay our next useless Space Shuttle until we arrive at Jug Ears birthday... I know he has one, because he told us he has a birth certificate to prove it.. If they can waste money in Dubai , we can sure do them one better. Every time we send one of these usless shuttles up, billions go out the window. But why should Osama care ? It ain't his money.

Quite the building, I do wonder how tall does a building have to be before it is not practical. I assume that after a certain height you are just building for bragging rights, but hey I no architect.

Good luck trying to do something like that ehre in the US. Our labor laws, Obama liberal BS and EPA regulations would impede any innovation or gargantuan projects that we ever plan on doing.

2012 will be a time when our once great nation will be great again!!

once had "twin tall buildings" until the Muslim extremists decided to flatten them. There are literally starving children all over that continent, yet the powers to be in that country are more concerned with "flashing" their money (yeah, we call it "bling") than helping their neighbors. How much did they give to the victims of the tsunami? I certainly hope no Westerners dare to vacation there. If they do, they should STAY!!

Morons! If the U.S. builds tall buildings the people that populate places like Dubai try to blow them up. That's spelled M-U-S-L-I-M-E
