'Clunker' data show pickup-for-pickup trades (AP)

AP - Billed as a way for the government to put more fuel-efficient vehicles on highways, the popular $3 billion Cash for Clunkers program mostly involved swaps of old Ford or Chevrolet pickups for new ones that got only marginally better gas mileage, according to an analysis of new federal data by The Associated Press. » Full Story on Yahoo! News

What did we expect? Thanks for giving my money to those folks so they could replace an old gas guzzler with a new one. And just wait, in a little while they will fall behind on paying their car loans, and the government will figure out another way to give those folks more of my money. Foolish me - I shoulda' figured out a way to trade in my subcompact for a sports car and still get cash-for-clunkers money.

Another case where Washington doesn't think. Most people drive a pickup for a reason - TO HAUL STUFF - can't haul it in a Ford Focus.

Not all of us just drives in a city with a mild climate! Some of us live more than 40 miles from a town and need a 4x4 just to get our of our driveways in the winter (last winter we had 4' of snow on the ground at one time) and have to haul stuff. instead of having several vehicles we just have a pickup to do all the driving we need to do all year round.

can you emagin hauling a ton of hay in a toyota sedan?

Another shining example of this govt. this administration, this congresses short sighted inept handling of our economy. How can you run something you fundamentally don't agree with and that is a system built on capitalist principals.

The "Cash for Clunkers" program did not solve a fundamental problem: a constricted credit market caused by defaults on heavily leveraged mortgages, credit cards and commercial loans. After Dem Spenders have lost a trillion dollars in less than a year, the credit crisis still looms large with financing unavailable for millions of home owners with good credit and jobs who need to refinance their now heavily devalued homes and investment properties. This is causing further defaults, foreclosures, bankruptcies, property tax base erosion and job losses which will put the nail in the coffin of this "recovering" [NOT] economy and this administration. The administration should be trying to stabilize existing mortgages and mortgage terms by extending their terms rather than getting people more heavily in debt with new cars when an older trade in or "clunker" would do (these are now scrap iron).

The dealers and the consumers that skirted the rules should be held accountable for paying back all of that wasted money. The dealers knew what the rules were and the consumers should have known as if was all over the internet and the news.

The government should keep it's nose out of the business of others. Clunkers was another dumb Obie program (many more to come, I'm sure). However, people have a right to trade as they wish and reap the benefits when stupid people put them out there... Loosely woven policy like most of the crap Obie puts out...

"The value that the customer got for a lot of these vehicles was just a gift, no question"
So our federal govt stole another three billion dollars from us and gave it away as 'gifts' to people who were financially secure enough to buy brand new cars & trucks.
Well, I certainly can't afford a new car note, so I'm stuck with my old clunker. Nice to know money I worked for was taken from me, & given to people much better off than I am.
I heard Edmonds reported that Cash for Clunkers cost the taxpayers $24,000 per car. Nice.
And who ultimately benefited? Ask yourself who extended all those new car loans, & is collecting all that interest......that's right folks! It's all just another bailout of the banksters!

The American People fooled again.
And still people defend this crap. No wonder they think we're stupid.

Why does anyone think a hybrid is more environmental friendly than any other car. It still creates pollution, just a different type. The batteries are a major form of pollution.

Here are the facts. 90% of the people who bought into the Cash-for Clunkers scam lost Exactly $3000 by making the trade-off and I find it hard to believe they did not check into this scam. This may have been a bright idea by George Soros who is an arm of the Democratic Party and of CNN.

By the way. On another subject. The votes in Virginia and New Jersey were a referendom on O'bama and his policies. If he's not depressed today all he needs to do is wait until the next four public elections. In the meantime tonight he's possibly sucking on a dildo.

Ask any truck truck would they trade their truck like that.. you either get laughed or they'd just turn around and leave you standing there. No way would give up my truck i dont care what you offer me.

I tried to trade in my full size suv for a smaller, way more fuel efficient car but because of the rules of the program could not. All vehicles elligible for the program were put into categories. My Suburban was a category 3 truck. You could only move up or down one category. I could only buy another Suburban or similar large suv, or a full size pickup. I was hoping to pay for the new vehicle mainly through savings in gas. The new vehicle I wanted gets 30+ MPG. My Suburban, maybe 10 MPG. Anything I was allowed to buy gets 15-17 MPG, Not enough to make it worth the purchase. Anyone who traded in a full size pickup or suv could only purchase a similar vehicle. Sounds like a lot did.

If that plan was so successful, why are some facts being sent out that it wasn't and if so , why hasn't the White House nut Gibbs out there disputing them ? Like it costing $24,000 a vehicle ? Brother, if we all could live on Spin, this would be the greatest administration , ever.

Hard to believe that people want to keep buying these gas-guzzling vehicles! I guess that's why the oil companies are still making billions in record profits. Unbelievable.
